While in my service learning I did observe 1 hour of 2nd
grades ESL program. The students whose first language is not English gets to
come together in one classroom and for an hour focus on learning the English language
better. Federal policy for language-minority
students learning English changed dramatically with the passage of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB), President George
W. Bush's plan for the re-authorization of the ESEA.
My service
learning is at a Title one school and I was able to experience a lot of the
laws that have been implemented into the school education system. I saw first-hand
how ESL was handled in classrooms along with all the technology they have to
help their students learn. As we learned, because of sputnik, our government
started investing more into children’s education. I saw that in every classroom
because each classroom had a laptop for each student and tablets for the
students to log in on. They have fun curriculum based games for students to
learn in more interactive way. Each classroom also has a smart board to help
them learn more and teachers are able to create interactive lessons with the
smart board to keep their children more engaged. Many teachers have told me
that their children love coming to school and learning new things because of
all the many ways they are able to teach them. They are never board they are
always having fun while learning.
