Blog#1
Here it goes, my first blog. In the class I am taking we have the opportunity to do 20 hours of service learning at a public elementary school. I will shadow a teacher for a few hours each week. This will help me better understand my course and confirm that I have chosen the correct profession. I will help lead lessons, grade papers, help with prep work and create games around the curriculum. I am so excited to get to be in a classroom.
I chose Canyons School District. I drove around the middle school and the area around the school is your average family neighborhood. The schools average salary is slightly higher than other schools around excluding Salt Lake City District area. The Diversity of the school is 88% White, 6% Hispanic, 4% of two or more races, 1% Black, 1% Asian, <1% Hawaiian Native/ Pacific Islander and <1% American Indian/ Alaska Native. The poverty in the Canyon District is 24%.
I also visited the school district web page and found that, "Canyons District is home to the first middle schools ever to receive STEM designations — a reflection of their strong focus in science, technology, engineering and mathematics." That is a great accomplishment. The Canyons School District acknowledges the great teachers by holding a Teachers of the Year ceremony, where they receive awards and prizes for their hard work. They welcome all parents to their classrooms to join in on activities and birthdays. I will have the honor of being in the classroom, and learning from one of the many great teachers this district has to offer.
